BAGHDAD – Soldiers with the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division captured a high-level target suspected of links to the al-Qaida terrorist network during an intelligence-driven raid, Dec. 12.

Soldiers from the 3rd Squadron, 7th Cavalry Regiment, conducted the operation which detained the target and two accomplices in a residence in Northeast Baghdad’s Adhamiyah District.

Tests conducted after the capture revealed explosive residue on the target’s hands and clothes. He is suspected of being involved in roadside bomb attacks on coalition forces and Iraqi security volunteers. Soldiers recovered an assault rifle and insurgent propaganda from the raid location.

Also on Dec. 12, Falcon Brigade Soldiers discovered an insurgent weapons cache containing a large amount of armor piercing ammunition during an operation in the Ur neighborhood of Baghdad.

Soldiers from the 1st Squadron, 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment made the discovery during a pre-dawn operation. An arrest was made in connection with the cache.

Both incidents are evidence of the improving security situation as coalition and Iraqi security forces continue to sweep out insurgent strongholds in Adhamiyah, said Lt. Col. David Oclander, the Falcon Brigade’s executive officer.
