As the summer draws to a close, children return to school, and we anticipate the change of season, the time draws near when the Regiment will return to Vilseck. Based on reports from the field the pace of operations remains high, the Regiment continues to be very much in a fight and our troops continue to perform magnificently.
Since we last communicated about activities here at the Association the on line store is now fully functional, preparations for the Regiments homecoming are moving along and work on the memorial to our Fallen Soldiers is underway.
Our drive for donations to build that memorial continues. We are pleased that nearly 200 individuals have contributed to date.
Nevertheless we need your support for this very worthy cause. No gift is too small to make a difference and any gift is appreciated. (Click here to donate now: On Line Memorial Donation)
Our efforts to support our wounded Soldiers here in U.S. hospitals and rehabilitation centers continues and the project to return these Soldiers to Vilseck for the homecoming ceremony is underway and directed by the Regimental Surgeon. Contact Sam Palmer for more information or to volunteer to help.
We are also pleased to announce that a new edition of the Thoroughbred will be coming out this month. Members will receive a copy via mail or email at their choice. If you would like to receive a copy please consider joining the Association. Your dues go toward our scholarship fund, support for our wounded and other programs designed to support the Regiment. (Click here to join: Join On Line ) If you want to learn more about these programs and the Association go the Association’s website News Center.
The “Fallen Soldiers Memorial and Park”
November 25th will be a very special day. I will be in Vilseck with other members of the Association leadership team and some of our members to welcome our Regiment home.
However earlier that day we will be seated among 50 trees in a new park located on the base.
After a brief ceremony we will unveil a black marble memorial. In that black marble face will be engraved the list of all of our brothers lost in Operation Iraqi Freedom.
All of the parents of these fine young Soldiers are being invited to the ceremony to honor their children. We will honor them with an individualized flag case and flag.
I am telling you about this event because I want you to know that what we are doing is not only a duty we share but an opportunity to honor our Soldiers and their families.
Your generosity will make the scene I described above possible. Your gift to the 2d Cavalry “Fallen Soldiers Fund” will help put those trees in the ground, will help to create those individual plaques and affix those names on the black marble. And your gift will allow us to put those flags in the hands of each parent.
In order to do those things we need your help. To date we have been blessed by the generosity of nearly 200 individuals made up primarily of our active duty enlisted Soldiers and Non-Commissioned Officers. They have been witnesses to the sacrifices and given substantially to this cause.
I am asking you to demonstrate your leadership and commitment by stepping up. If you can give a substantial donation we would like you to do so; if you can only give one dollar, that will be appreciated as well. What is most important now is that YOU participate.
The cost to construct the memorial itself is approximately $30,000. Our challenge is to raise this amount in time to complete construction by November.
I am asking you to help. Can you please contribute what it might cost to take a trooper to dinner if you had that opportunity? A good steak and a beer (or two) might run you about $100. Or, perhaps you would consider giving a tank of gasoline $60-75? No gift is too small to make a difference and any gift is appreciated.
For those who can afford more, remember, we are registered with the IRS and your contribution is tax deductible.
Why not contribute on line right now?
