Association anticipates great welcome home and memorial ceremony in Vilseck

All Cavalrymen are trained to anticipate future events. This is known as “leaning forward in the saddle”. Here at the 2d Cavalry Association News Center this may be especially true as we, along with thousands of friends and family members, anticipate the return of the 2d Stryker Cavalry Regiment (2d SCR) from their deployment in support of the Global War on Terror.

The Regiment is understandably focused on the tough job they are still doing, and doing so in an admirably fine fashion. The Rear Detachment Group in Vilseck Germany are keeping the home fires burning while also getting ready for the Regiment’s return to home station. The Association is focusing on doing those things that we can do to help with the welcome home and memorial ceremony that awaits the Regiment’s full return from their deployment. And what a homecoming it should be!
The welcome home and memorial ceremony is scheduled to be held in Vilseck Germany on 25 Nov 08. Is anyone up for some Jaeger Schnitzel and / or Jaegermeister?  The night before the ceremony, the Association will sponsor a dinner in Vilseck. We are hopeful that there may be as many as 25 – 30 Regimental Alumnus in attendance.

The ceremony itself will be both joyful and solemn as the Welcome home will also include a new memorial to our fallen Troopers. Included in the ceremony will be a motorcade of vintage military vehicles, provided by the Military Car Club Pilsen, along with hundreds of our friends from the Czech Republic. Merritt Powell, the Regiment’s Co-Pipe Major will provide that touch of class that only a well tuned set of Pipes in his capable hands may provide.

The Regiment will begin a period of well deserved block leave soon after the festivities. The Association members who are planning on going over already have their own ideas for after the ceremony. Some will visit old friends while others may decide to return to previous home bases in Germany or even go troop the Grenze. No FRAGREPs please.

As more information and details are available, they will be posted on the new Welcome Home / Memorial section of the web site. Always Ready.
